Although the format looks simple and easy, it is one of the difficult segments of PSLE English and puts pressure on the students. It may be tempting to add subtitles in your native language when viewing your favorite movies or series. You’ll be tempted to read the subtitles rather than listen to how native English speakers pronounce the words. If you’re super stuck on a word, pause the show and look up definitions of the vocabulary.

To be truly effective, students need to actively engage with the themes they will be discussing in the examination. This means that they need to think critically about a topic and consider different perspectives and opinions. They also need to be able to articulate their thoughts and ideas in a clear and concise manner. Practising with the PEEL structure can help students to organise their thoughts and develop a strong, well-supported response or argument. One student at a time will read one of the lists of wishes and the rest of the class have to guess who they think the wishes belong to. Give out the worksheet and ask them to work in pairs to see if they can write the correct response to the appropriate sentence. Then choose a student to say one and another student / group to try to give the answer.
To do this with varying abilities it is possible to change all aspects. You can choose topics that will appeal to your students, if professional students you can choose topics from their careers for example. Then let each group debate their topic in front of the class.
